ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Senior David Gonzalvez scored 15 points to lead five Spiders in double-figures as Richmond led by as many as 17 in a 77-72 Atlantic 10 Quarterfinal victory.
The second seed Spiders (25-7) advance to the Atlantic 10 semifinals for the third time in nine seasons in the league and will play third seed and No. 24 ranked Xavier on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
The Musketeers edged Richmond 78-76 in double overtime on Feb. 28 in Cincinnati. Xavier is the only Atlantic 10 team that the Spiders have not defeated this season.
Gonzalvez made 5-of-11 field goals, including 4-of-6 three-pointers to finish with a team-high 15 points. He also had six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Junior Kevin Smith had 14 points, including four second-half dunks and senior Ryan Butler also had 14 points, making 3-of-4 three-pointers.
Junior Kevin Anderson had 13 point and junior Justin Harper had 13 points, making 3-of-6 three-pointers.
The Spiders led by 17 at the half and led by 17 with under seven minutes to play, but UMass used a frantic comeback behind the hot shooting of Anthony Gurley to make it a game in the final minutes. Gurley made 8-of-11 field goals, including 4-of-6 three-pointers.
Richmond improved to 4-0 on neutral courts this season and won their 25th game of the season, one shy of the school record for wins in a complete season. The Spiders already set the school's regular-season record with 24 wins entering the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
