UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -
The Richmond women's basketball team (19-11) plays No. 1 seed and fifth ranked Xavier today at noon in the quarterfinal round of the A-10 Tournament. The Spiders advanced after downing UMass yesterday in the first round.
Of Note:
Richmond withstood a late UMass rally to hold on for a 54-47 victory Friday afternoon in the opening game of the 2010 Atlantic 10 Tournament at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
Richmond decimated UMass on the glass, 44-30. Brittani Shells led the pack with eight rebounds while Bilney contributed four offensive boards. The 44 rebounds recorded was the Spiders' highest since posting 57 on Radford Dec. 21st.
A-10 Sixth Player of the Year Abby Oliver scored a game-high 16 points, off 5-for-12 shooting. Oliver has now posted nine double-figure performances the past 10 games, and has led Spider scoring in five of the last eight games.
Bilney provided a clutch 10 points off the bench, while Shells and Bell each chipped in with nine points apiece.
The Spiders dropped a 67-55 decision to then No. 7 Xavier on Feb. 7th. Abby Oliver led Richmond scoring with 19 points.
Richmond won the first six of seven in the series, but the Musketeers are winners of six in a row. Richmond's last win over Xavier was a 72-65 victory at the Robins Center Feb. 6, 2005. Today's game marks the first meeting between the two teams in the A-10 Tournament.
The Spiders' last win over a ranked opponent was a 45-33 victory over then-No. 25 Wake Forest last January in Richmond.
