Back-To-Back: Women's Tennis Repeats As A-10 Champs

BELLEVILLE, Ill. -
Second-seeded Richmond turned away No. 5 GW 4-0 to capture its second-straight and program seventh A-10 title Sunday morning at the Kings Point Sports Club in Belleville, Ill.
"I would like to congratulate George Washington on a great tournament and for advancing to the finals," commented Richmond Head Coach Mark Wesselink. "We battled through injuries all spring, but we always kept our focus on the A-10 Championship. We have waited for this moment all season and I am very proud of my team."
The Spiders picked up the pivotal doubles point as the No. 1 tandem of Erin Clark/Helen Cunningham (UR) defeated Mimi Hamling/Zoe Krohn (GW) 8-2. No. 3 pair Syndey Grant/Joanna Matuszczuk soon followed suit with a 8-5 victory over GW's Jennifer Hirsh/Sasha Gluck.
Richmond led 1-0 heading into singles play and wasted no time burying the Colonials. The Spiders picked up straight set wins at number two, three and four singles, clinching the A-10 crown.
The Spiders' Helen Cunningham picked up Richmond's first singles win, followed by No. 2 Kelly Tidwell and No. 4 Sydney Grant.
Richmond captures its sixth title in the last seven years and seventh A-10 crown overall.
The win clinches a spot in next month's NCAA Women's Tennis Championship.
