SHORT HOPS
In the home stretch of the regular season, the Richmond baseball team is back home this weekend to host second-place Saint Joseph's in an Atlantic 10 series at Pitt Field.
The series is underway Friday at 3 p.m., continues Saturday at 2 p.m. and wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m. Gametracker and live free video coverage of all three games is available at RichmondSpiders.com.
Richmond has won eight games this season in come-from-behind fashion, including both victories over cross-town rival VCU -- the Spiders' first season sweep of the Rams since 2002. In last Saturday's win at Temple, Richmond trailed 5-0 before rallying for a 12-7 triumph.
Senior RHP Ian Marshall gets the ball in Friday's series opener, fresh off the team's first complete-game pitching performance last Friday at Temple. Although taking the loss, Marshall allowed just three earned runs with six Ks and no walks -- he's walked just one over his last 15.2 innings.
Marshall ranks 10th in the A-10 with his 4.60 ERA on the season, while his batting average against of .245 in A-10 play ranks seventh-lowest.
Sophomore C/DH Chris Cowell has homered five times over Richmond's last 10 games and is hitting a team-best .366 (15-of-41) over that span with 11 runs and 10 RBI. Cowell has his average at .308 on the season and is ranked third in the A-10 with 11 bombs. Cowell's six homers in A-10 play leads the league.
Senior RF Victor Croglio and sophomore SS Adam McConnell each bring five-game hitting streaks into the weekend series. Croglio batted .500 last week (eight-of-16) to pace the offense.
