Ian Marshall Drafted Wednesday By Atlanta Braves

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - Graduating senior RHP Ian Marshall was drafted by the Atlanta Braves Wednesday in the 40th-round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Marshall becomes the first Spider drafted since 2008.
Marshall, drafted for the second time in his career, is the 31st Spider drafted since the 1995 season. The Gaithersburg, Md. native was originally chosen out of high school by the New York Mets in the 14th round.
Along with Marshall, incoming freshman LHP Chris Bates (Ossining, N.Y.) was taken in the 15th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. The decision on whether or not to pursue his collegiate career has not yet been made by the first-ever player drafted from Regis High School.
It is expected that Marshall will join the Danville Braves in Danville, Va. - as part of the Braves organization in the Appalachian League (Rookie). D-Braves Opening Day is June 22.
The senior righty brought his Spider career to a close in dominating fashion, throwing his second complete-game of the season as Richmond defeated A-10 regular-season champion Charlotte, 6-4, in the second-to-last game of the season.
He ended 2010 with the Atlantic 10's sixth-best ERA of 4.04, along with a sparkling ERA of 3.38 in A-10 play. In 78 innings of work this season, Marshall posted a 4-4 record with 59 strikeouts against just 17 walks. In 56 innings versus A-10 opponents, Marshall fanned 48 (10 walks).
In the final three starts of his career, the three-time A-10 Pitcher of the Week posted nine strikeouts at Duquesne, a career-high 10 at Rhode Island and versus Charlotte.
The last Richmond baseball player drafted was RHP Alex Hale in 2008 - 30th round by Boston. Since 1995, Marshall is the only Spider drafted by the Braves.
