UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
The Richmond women's soccer team hosts James Madison Friday at 7 p.m. at Ukrop Park in its opening game of the 2010 season. The Spiders seek to win their third straight season opener against the Dukes.
Last season, Natalie LeClair led Richmond over then-No. 25 JMU 3-0, thanks to her two-tally collegiate debut. The victory marked first victory over a ranked opponent since 2004.
"After two weeks of preseason in the heat, we are eager to get started. JMU is picked No.1 in the CAA and they have a strong team returning. We have rebuilt our team from the inside out, and I think that the "pieces" are there for a very strong run this season. I hope to see good concentration and commitment to the game on Friday."
Richmond welcomes nine freshmen to this year's lineup, including All-Rookie preseason selection, Becca Wann. Wann garnered A-10 accolades after being named Virginia Player of the Year. Wann was also recognized as the Richmond Times-Dispatch basketball and soccer Player of the Year.
Sophomore Shondel Archer also grabbed recognition in the offseason, being named one of TopDrawerSoccer.com's Sophomores To Watch . Archer led the Spiders with seven goals and 16 points last season.
Richmond starts its 2010 season with a competitive non-conference slate, playing three 2009 NCAA teams in UNC-Wilmington, Kennesaw State and Virginia. The Spiders also travel to Knoxville, Tenn. for the Lady Volunteer Classic.
After Friday's opener, the Spiders return to Ukrop Park Sep. 10 to host American at 7 p.m.
