CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
The Richmond men's tennis team participated in the Virginia Classic over the weekend in Charlottesville, Va.
"For the first tournament of the year, we had positive results on Friday and Saturday," said head coach Ben Johnson. "It was good to see where we are and where we want to go. As for Sunday, our level of conditioning became a factor. We were physically drained and it was apparent on the court. Overall, we learned a lot concerning our strengths and weaknesses and are looking forward to matches this weekend at Mary Washington."
Sophomore Sebastien Fauchet picked up a win the Blue singles over Elon's Philip Nemec 4-6, 7-6, 6-1. Classmate Jesse Feder defeated Michiel Doornednbal of Maryland 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 in the black singles division. Feder battled Ben Hoogland of William & Mary for third place, but dropped back-to-back 6-4 sets.
In the green singles division, Justin Baker battled Mirza Klis of Cornell but dropped 6-0, 6-3 sets. Baker defeated Longwood's Jimmy Davis 7-6, 6-1 to advance to the finals of the fifth-place bracket, but fell to Jonathan Pine of Virginia Tech 6-1, 6-1 in the title match.
Freshman Ethan Dunbar made his debut as a Spider by picking up a win over Cornell's Justin Karson 6-4, 6-4. Dunbar then went on to defeat Virginia Tech's Adam Lawton, 6-1, 6-4. Dunbar qualified for the third place title match in the purple singles round, but fell to GW's Ugur Atalay 4-6, 6-3, 10-3.
In the white doubles division, the tandem of Fauchet/Dunbar recorded a win over Dino Dell'Orto/Reese Milner of Virginia 8-3.
The Spiders continue fall action this weekend at the Mary Washington tournament in Fredricksburg, Va.
