Wiley Earns Singles Win as Spiders Fall at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at Longwood on Friday afternoon at the New Lancer Courts. The setback moves the Spiders to 0-4 on the spring season, while the Lancers improve to 1-3.

How It Happened

Longwood struck first in doubles, claiming a 6-2 win on court three as Alejandro Uribe and Daniel Lopez (LU) defeated Charlie Burdell and Otto Sewell. Richmond answered at the top spot, where Davis Wiley and Cole Brashear secured a 6-4 victory over Timeo Puech and Daniel Borisov (LU). The doubles point came down to court two, and Paxton Pritchard and Sam Rathmanner delivered a 7-5 win against Marko Mrdak and Rufus Plane (LU) to give the Spiders a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

Wiley extended the advantage early in singles play, earning a commanding 6-2, 6-2 win over Puech (LU) at No. 1 to put Richmond ahead 2-0. Longwood responded on court four as Daniel Lopez (LU) defeated Otto Sewell 6-1, 6-3 to trim the deficit. The Lancers then evened the match at 2-2 when Daniel Borisov (LU) outlasted Burdell 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 2.

Momentum continued to swing toward the Lancers as Rufus Plane (LU) topped Pritchard 7-5, 6-3 on court three to give Longwood its first lead of the afternoon. Alejandro Uribe (LU) followed with a 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-0 match clinch over Rathmanner at No. 6 to push the advantage to 4-2. Petter Lindquist (LU) finished the match on court five, rallying past Brashear 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
