
Spiders Tied For Third With No. 24 Wake Forest Entering Final Round Of VCU Shootout

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - Senior Sam Beach is in fourth at 4-under-par 140 and the Richmond men's golf team is tied with perennial national power Wake Forest for third after two rounds of the VCU Shootout, played Monday at Hermitage Country Club.
The third and final round of the VCU Shootout will tee off with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Spiders are at 2-under 474 after identical rounds of 1-under 287, tied with No. 24 ranked Wake Forest and three shots behind second-place East Carolina. Richmond is tied with No. 24 ranked Wake Forest and nine shots ahead of Atlantic 10 rival Charlotte, who has won the last four conference titles. The Spiders are 10 shots ahead of No. 37 ranked Virginia Tech and 12 shots ahead of No. 7 ranked Liberty.
Beach shot a pair of 2-under-par 70s on a rainy and sometimes windy Monday on the par-72, 6,955-yard Manakin Course. The Glen Allen, Va. native had four birdies in the first round and three in the second round.
Richmond senior Michael Shrader and sophomore Nick Austin are tied for 16th at even-par 144. Shrader had three birdies on the way to shooting a 1-under 71 in the rough morning conditions and a 1-over 73 in the afternoon round. Austinhad four birdies in the first round and one birdie in the second round as he shot a pair of 72s.
Richmond junior Brad Miller, who entered the day ranked seventh in the nation by Golfstat, shot a 74 and 75 to sit in a tie for 35th at 149 with freshman Jack Wilkes (77-72). Spider junior Jack Lessing is tied for 77th playing as an individual.
