10/30/2011 | Women's Soccer
Becca Wann scored her 15th goal of the season and secured the Spiders a bye in next week's A-10 Tournament in Richmond's 1-0 win over UMass Sunday.
As the No. 2 seed, Richmond will play the highest remaining seed (3, 4, or 5) in the second semifinal game Friday at 7:30 p.m.
With the win, the Spiders received the program's first-ever bye in next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament. Richmond improved to 13-4-3 and a program-best 7-1-1 in league action to finish second in league standings and the No. 2 seed in the conference championship next week.
Richmond's 13 wins are the program's most since the 2002 season, when it won the A-10 Tournament and went on a remarkable run to the Sweet 16. Richmond has recorded 13 wins four other times in its history in the 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 seasons.
In the record-setting 2002 season, Richmond notched a program-best 15 wins and knocked off both Dayton and Rhode Island en route to the A-10 crown at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio where this year's tournament returns.
Wann scored her team and conference-leading 15th goal of the season when she received an Emily Dale feed in the 62nd minute. Wann received a cross pass on the left side and headed the ball past the Minutewomen keeper.
Richmond outshot UMass, 22-11 and Natalie LeClair led the Spiders with six tallies. Wann followed with four shots, which put her at a season-high 102 tries this season, ranking her first in program history for shots in a single season. Wann's 15 tallies is second in a single season behind Brooke Sands' record 22 tallies in 1997.
Liza Koch leads the team and ranks second in the league with eight assists. The eight dishes rank second all-time for assists in a single season.
Richmond finished its regular season with a 7-0-2 record at home and won eight of its last nine. The Spiders have not dropped a contest since Sept. 30.
