RALEIGH, N.C. -- The men's golf team fired Tuesday's third-lowest team round and the Spiders finished sixth at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh, N.C.
Three teams that finished in the top five were ranked 39th higher, while Richmond beat out the host -- 41st-ranked N.C. State -- by nine strokes.
"The team battled today with the golf course playing very difficult," said head coach Adam Decker. "It was a very good team effort today and we beat a strong N.C. State team this week."
Junior Daniel Walker went low Tuesday with a 71, but it was senior Brad Miller who led Richmond for the tournament. He carded a 73 Tuesday, after rounds of 74 and 71 Monday, finishing tied for 16th with a five-over 218. It marks the eighth career Top 20 for Miller and his second of the year.
The Spiders posted a 291 on Tuesday, which trailed only the 287 by second-place UNC-Greensboro and the 290 by team champion, No. 39 Memphis.
The Tigers (861) edged the Spartans (863) by two strokes, followed by Louisiana-Lafayette (866), No. 27 East Carolina (870) and No. 26 Campbell (870) in the top five.
Richmond (878) was 12 strokes better than the No. 41 Wolfpack Tuesday and jumped them on the leaderboard.
"I think it confirms that we are doing the right things and getting to be tougher competitors," said Decker. "We have the talent to compete - we need to never lose faith in our abilities out there."
Both Walker and sophomore Jack Wilkes charged out of the gate with front-side 33s. Wilkes birdied four of the first nine holes and finished the round at one-over 72. For the tournament, Wilkes' 54-hole total of 220 (70-78-72) was good for 24th.
Walker posted a 223 for the tournament (75-77-71) and finished T38th. Junior Nick Austin was one stroke better than Walker and was T30th (75-72-75). Freshman Colin McDade was a stroke back of Walker and was T45th (76-73-75).
Richmond is in action again Oct. 16-18 at The Invitational on the Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
