Spiders' Solid Shooting Sinks Pirates, 72-51

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Four Spiders finished in double figures as Richmond handed Hampton a 72-51 loss in the opening round of the Cancun Challenge on Thursday at the Robins Center.
The Spiders (2-1) were led by junior Darien Brothers, who poured in a game-high 15 points behind 4-7 shooting from long range. Freshman Kendall Anthony reached double figures for the third-consecutive contest with his 14 points.
Senior Josh Duinker had a solid night with 10 points and six boards, as did sophomore Derrick Williams who also finished the contest with 10 tallies. Senior Francis-Cedric Martel came up just shy of double digits with nine points. He and fellow senior Darrius Garrett registered a team-best eight boards in the win.
Richmond led by as many as 29 points in the second half in outplaying the Pirates (1-1) on both ends of the floor. The Spiders shot 24-of-59 from the field and an impressive 11-of-21 from long range while committing just 13 turnovers. The team, which came away with eight steals to go with four blocks on the defensive end, held Hampton to just 25 percent shooting and 11 percent from behind the arc on the night.
The Pirates were paced by senior Mike Tuitt's 11 points. Junior Jasper Williams was just behind with 10 points while sophomore David Bruce tallied a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Spiders continue play in the Cancun Challenge on Saturday when they welcome Sacred Heart to the Robins Center at 5 p.m.
