11/03/2011 | Women's Soccer
Becca Wann was named the 2011 Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year as announced by the league office Thursday afternoon.
Wann becomes the first-ever Spider to nab the A-10 Player of the Year award. Wann was also named to the All Conference first team. It was the second time in as many years for Wann to grab coveted first-team honors. Wann followed her 2010 Rookie of the Year freshman campaign with a record-breaking sophomore season. Wann was among the top-five in the A-10 in every offensive category. Wann led the league in shots (106) and is 13th in the nation in goals (15) fourth in game-winning tallies (7) and 17th in points (36).
The Chesterfield, Va. native is currently second in a single season in both points (36) and goals (15). Wann set a single-season record for game-winning goals (7). Wann's 10 career game-winning goals already ranks second all-time. Wann has either scored or assisted in 14 of Richmond's 20 games. Wann is the first-ever player in program history to be named both Rookie and Player of the Year in her career. Two-sport athlete Wann also plays basketball for the Spiders.
In addition to Wann, five other Spiders garnered All Conference recognition. Junior midfielder Natalie LeClair was named to the All Conference second team, as was senior defender Kristin Lescalleet and senior goalkeeper Melissa Pacheco. LeClair follows Wann in scoring with four goals and six assists for 14 points. LeClair was played in 18 games, making 17 starts and is second on the team with two game-winning tallies. LeClair was a 2009 A-10 All-Rookie selection.
Lescalleet earns her second All Conference honors in as many years, as she was a 2010 All Conference second team honoree. Lescalleet anchors the Spider defense and has started 17 games this season. Lescalleet had an assist at Temple in the Spiders' 3-2 win.
Pacheco grabs the first All Conference accolades of her career after a stellar senior season. Pacheco ranks second all-time in saves (216) and shutouts (12) at Richmond. Pacheco is 30th in the country in goals against average (0.694) and 12th in save percentage (0.881). The Spiders rank second in the A-10 in shutouts (11).
Two Spiders garnered All-Rookie recognition in defender Melissa Alvarez-Freeman and midfielder Ashley Williams. Alvarez-Freeman started all nine A-10 contests and Williams saw action in all 20 games, recording her first collegiate goal against Western Carolina in a Spiders' 4-1 victory. Williams also had an assist against ODU.
The second-seeded Spiders play Friday night at 7:30 p.m. against the highest remaining seed (3, 4 or 5) in the semifinal game at Baujan Field in the 2011 Atlantic 10 Tournament.
