UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Kevin Anderson joined a very select group Friday having a banner with his number 14 unveiled in the Robins Center rafters.
Anderson is just the third Spider men's player to have a banner hoisted to the rafters, joining Johnny Newman and Warren Mills. Women's players Karen Elsner and Pam Bryant have banners in the rafters and Hall-of-Fame coach Dick Tarrant is the only Spider coach to be honored with a banner.
"In practice sometimes coach would say 'don't you want to be great kid, don't you want to see one of your jerseys hanging in the rafters," Anderson said prior to the ceremony. "Today it's here. I'm going to see my banner up there with the great players that are already up there."
Anderson played in more Richmond victories (91) than any other Spider player, leading the Spiders to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, back-to-back Top-25 finishes, back-to-back Atlantic 10 title games, the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship and the 2011 Sweet 16.
KA was the 2010 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, and was the 2011 Atlantic 10 Tournament MVP. He is second on Richmond's all-time scoring list with 2,165 career points and finished his career third in steals (217), third in field goals made (768), fourth in assists (410) and sixth in three-pointers (175).
Anderson was a three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection, including the last two as a First-Team pick. The Atlanta, Ga. native averaged 26.2 points per game in the Spiders' last five wins over ranked teams and 24.2 points per game in the Spiders' last seven wins vs. ranked teams.
