Spiders Open Season at CNU Holiday Open

Newport News, Va. - The Richmond women's track & field team opened its indoor season on Sunday at the Christopher Newport Holiday Open in Newport News, Va. The Spiders' youth was on full display in Sunday's season-opener, as all but one of the team's participants were underclassmen.
Sophomore Alyson McGonigle highlighted the meet with her showing in the 800 meters, pulling away from the pack in the final lap to win the event with a time of 2:19.77.
Freshman Karissa Jenkins opened the morning by turning in a leap of 4.95 meters in the long jump, earning her a 12th-place finish in the event.
Fellow newcomer Jasmine Smalls finished second in her heat of the 60 meters with a time of 7.98, while classmate Amber Young followed in third with a time of 8.17. Smalls would also clock a 63.09 for a third-place showing in her heat of the 400 meters.
In the middle distance events, freshman Alexis Williams crossed the line second in her heat of the 600 meters with a time of 1:42.40 with sophomore Meghan Hart close behind in fourth (1:46.11). Freshman Deborah Fajuyigbe recorded a 1:44.60 to take third in her heat.
Both Spider squads will break for final exams and return to the track for the UNC Dick Taylor Invitational on Jan. 13 and 14.
