Despite Stellar Effort By Goring, Spiders Fall At Saint Joe's

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -
Senior Crystal Goring poured in a season-high 22 points and dished a career-best eight assists but Richmond fell to Saint Joseph's 71-61 Saturday afternoon at Hagan Arena.
Goring went a career-high 9-for-15 from the field and her 22 tallies were two shy of a career-high.
The competitive, basket-for-basket game saw 11 lead changes. Saint Joe's held a narrow 30-29 margin at the break after a Michelle Baker jumper fell through with five seconds left.
From the first whistle, the game went shot-for-shot as neither team trailed by more than a possession the entire first frame. Richmond used Goring as its ace in the hole, pounding the ball inside for 20 first-half points in the paint. Abby Oliver led Richmond scoring at the break with nine tallies, including converting an old-fashioned four point play.
Saint Joe's came out of the break firing on all cylinders, going on a 13-4 run to take a 43-33 lead with 15:50 remaining in the game.
The Spiders looked to turn the corner after a Goring jumper started a 10-0 run to get Richmond to within 50-49 with 8:31 left. Goring and Shells scored back-to-back buckets to give Richmond its first lead of the second half at 53-52 with 7:30 left.
But the Hawks would piece together an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to surge ahead 63-53 with just under five to play. Richmond would cut the deficit to six two times in the following two minutes but could get no closer.
Oliver followed Goring with 16 points, off 6-for-11 from the field. Shells chipped in with 12 points and four assists.
Richmond won the battle in the paint, 34-28 and dished 17 assists, one shy of a season-high.
Richmond fell to 15-10 on the season, 6-5 in league action.
The Spiders have a week off before hosting home-and-home rival GW Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Robins Center.
