March 17, 2011
Team
Richmond has won eight-consecutive games, and 15 of its last 17 and is now 28-7 overall on the season. The 28 wins is a school record (previous record was 26 held by last season's NCAA First Round team and 1988's Sweet 16 Team).
Richmond advances to the NCAA Third Round and faces 13th-seeded Morehead State, who beat fourth-seeded Louisville 62-61. That game is Saturday and the time has not been announced.
Richmond and Morehead State have never met, and the Spiders have never battled a 13-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Spiders improved to 16-4 this season in games played away from Robins Center (6-1 on neutral courts and 10-3 in road games).
With the win over Vanderbilt, Richmond is now 9-3 in its last 12 games versus teams from BCS conferences - 5-1 this season.
Richmond has now won seven of its last nine games versus Top 25 teams (Vanderbilt was ranked 25th in the AP poll entering Thursday's game).
Richmond stands as the first and only team in NCAA history to win games as a 12, 13, 14 and 15-seed and with Thursday's win, the Spiders now have three wins in school history as a 12-seed.
Richmond now owns a 7-8 record all-time in its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance and the Spiders are 3-1 when playing as a No. 12 seed - 1984 Play-In Round win over 12 Rider 89-65; 1984 First Round win over 5 Auburn 72-71; 1984 Second Round loss to 4 Indiana 75-67; 2011 Second Round win over 5 Vanderbilt 69-66.
The Spiders turned the ball over just three times in the games (none in the second half) and the three giveaways was one shy of Richmond's all-time single-game low. The record of two turnovers was set versus Syracuse in the 2002 NIT.
The Spiders trailed by 11 in the first half (31-20) and it marks the first time this season Richmond has overcome a double-digit deficit to get a win. Richmond trailed George Washington by nine, and won 68-58 and trailed Temple by nine (A-10 semifinals) and won 58-54.
Players
Senior G Kevin Anderson is averaging 26.2 points/game over Richmond's last five games versus Top 25 teams.
Anderson's 25 points ranks tied for third on Richmond's NCAA Tournament single-game scoring list, trailing the 27 by Peter Woolfork versus Georgia Tech in 1988 and the 26 by Johnny Newman versus Auburn in 1984. Newman had 25 on two other occasions and Chris Fleming had 25 versus Temple in 1991.
Anderson has now surpassed the 20-point mark 43 times in his career (14 this season).
Anderson now has 2,138 points in his career, ranking third all-time at Richmond. He needs seven points to catch Mike Perry (2,145) in second.
When Anderson leads the team in scoring this season, the Spiders are now 13-3.
Senior F Justin Harper scored 13 points versus Vanderbilt and has reached in double-figures in points in 29-consecutive games.
Harper has scored 1,416 points in his career and stands 14th all-time at Richmond. Harper surpassed Mike Skrocki's (2001-04) 1,408 in the game and needs nine more to catch Walt Lysaght (1952-56) in 13th.
With a game-high five blocked shots, junior F Darrius Garrett now has 123 in his career and ranked seventh on the Spiders' all-time list. He needs 10 more to catch Jonathan Collins (1999-03) in sixth.
