UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Nick Austin tied for second as the Richmond men's golf team finished second at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational, played Monday and Tuesday at the The Country Club of Spartanburg.
The second-place finish was the Spiders' seventh in eight tournaments this season and its fifth top-3 finish in the last six tournaments.
Richmond shot a 279 in the opening round, a 284 in the second round and a 300 in the final round to finish at 863, 5 shots behind tournament winner East Tennessee State.
"It was a step in the right direction for us. It was a tough final round, but I think we can learn from it, especially heading into our conference championship in a couple of weeks," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "Everyone put up a good round or two that contributed to the team. We need to have each others backs out there and play for our teammates."
Austin shot a 5-under 67 in the first round, 1-over 73 in the second round and an even-par 72 in the final round to finish at 4-under 212, two shots off the lead. It was the best finish of Austin's career and his second top-5 finish of the season and third top-10 finish.
"Nick really played well this week," Decker said. "A couple of more putts fall and he wins the tournament."
Senior Sam Beach tied for ninth at 1-under-par 215 on the par-72, 6,648-yard course. Beach shot a 1-under 71 in the first round, 2-under 70 in the second and a 2-over 74 in the final round.
Sophomore Daniel Walker tied for 28th at 5-over 221, shooting an even-par 72 and 1-under 71 on Monday and a 78 Tuesday. Junior Brad Miller tied for 31st at 6-over-222. He opened the tournament with a 3-under 69, shot 1-over 73 in the second round and an 80 in the final round. Senior Michael Shrader tied for 58th at 228 (82-70-76).
The Spiders return to action this Saturday and Sunday at the NC State Invitational, the final tournament before the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship.
