CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Richmond track & field team heads to Charlotte this weekend for the 15th annual Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship hosted by the 49ers at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center.
The championship will be split between two days, with action starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Complete results and live stats will be available online through the A-10 website (www.atlantic10.com)
A pair of redshirt seniors lead the Spiders on the men's side in Andrew Benford and Matt Llano.
Benford is the reigning A-10 Performer of the Week and was named the 2009 Most Outstanding Performer at the A-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Benford enters the meet with A-10's fastest 5,000m time (13:55.88) and the second-fastest 3,000m steeplechase time (8:48.94).
Llano holds the conference's top time in the 10,000m of 28:43.30, which he put down last weekend at the Stanford Invitational -- it's also a time that ranks 10th-fastest in the NCAA this season. He is the reigning A-10 championship in the 10,000m.
Similar to the men's side, the Richmond women also hold down the top two spots in the 5,000m with Amy Van Alstine (16:09.22) and Nicol Traynor (16:10.37), while Julie Rechel is the league's fastest this year in the 10,000m (35:14.82).
The Spiders also have a chance to score big points in the field events with Monica Howard bringing the league's top discus mark to the Championship (48.43m) and Heather Roush holding the top spot in the javelin (48.08m).
