Richmond fell to No. 10 Virginia, 6-0, Sunday night at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va.
"I'm proud of our performance tonight," said head coach Peter Albright. Virginia is one of the best offensive teams in the country. We caused them a lot of problems tonight and created chances for our offense. We can take a lot from this game. I'm very proud of our kids despite the result."
After 10 solid minutes of pressure defense by the Spiders, Virginia found its opening with a pass from the right side to a waiting Cavalier for the game's first tally. From there, the Cavaliers scored two more before the break to go up 3-0.
Andrea Young had a stellar game in goal, turning away countless Cavalier tally attempts and registered seven saves.
Richmond had its best shot to score when the Spiders were awarded a pentalty kick after a trip in the box. Becca Wann lasered a shot but it sailed wide left.
Wann led Richmond with two shots.
The Spiders travel to University Park, Pa. next weekend for the Penn State Invitational. Richmond opens play against George Mason Friday at 5 p.m.
