UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's tennis team kicked off fall action at the William & Mary Invitational this weekend in Williamsburg, VA
"Elizabeth Sims played some solid singles and Melissa Kandinata showed good doubles skills with different partners," said head coach Mark Wesselink. "I thought Elizabeth handled some pressure points well in her singles victories. Melissa's picked up two doubles wins and her volleys and movement at the net should really help bolster our doubles line-up. Most of the team is not yet in match play form as this tournament is very early. We have some work to do on our fitness and as that improves, we can focus on playing more matches. It was good for the team to see where they are and what has to be done before the Wake Forest tournament in three weeks."
Senior, Helen Cunningham ended the weekend 0-1 in Flight A Singles with a defeat from Tulane University's, Caroline Thornton. In Flight B Singles, Melissa Kandinata (Sr.) and Joanna Matuszczyk (Fr.) finished their weekend 0-1. Junior, Alex Smyth, finished 0-1 in Flight C Singles action.
Sophomore, Elizabeth Sims went 3-0 with wins over Old Dominion University, James Madison University, and Tulane University in Flight D Singles. Nil Horoz, freshman, went 0-1 in the same flight. Mariana Arana went 0-1 in Flight E Singles.
In Flight A Doubles, Cunningham/Smyth defeated Alecsiu/Kovacevic (Columbia) 8-4 but dropped an 8-5 decision to DePaoli/Yapp-Shing from the University of Pennsylvania. Kandinata/Matuszczyk recorded an 8-5 win over Alesciu/Kovacevic of the University of Columbia in the same flight.
Horoz/Sims went 1-1, defeating Smith/Ford of William and Mary, 8-5 in Flight B Doubles. Kandinata/Arana went 1-0, defeating the University of Pennsylvania's DePaoli/Yapp-Shing, 8-6.
The Spiders will continue their fall competition at the Wake Forest Invitational on the weekend of September 30.
