Bilney Blisters GW With School Record Eight Treys
01/12/2012 | Women's Basketball
Rachael Bilney scored a career-high 32 points, behind a single-game record eight threes as the Spiders beat GW, 74-57, Wednesday night at the Robins Center.
The Spiders improved to 13-3, 1-1 while GW fell to 8-8, 1-1. It was Richmond's seventh-straight win over its home-and-home rival.
Besides being a career-high, Bilney's 32 tallies was a Spider season-high and the most point production from a Richmond player since Brittani Shells scored 34 points to open the 2010-11 season at Western Carolina Nov. 12, 2010.
Bilney's eight long-range bombs set a single-game record for three-point shots in a game. Bilney surpassed three other Spiders who had currently sunk seven threes in a game. The most recent to hit seven threes in a game was Araceli Gil against Fordham Jan. 22, 2006.
Bilney ended her memorable night with a career-high 32 points, behind 9-of-11 from the field, 8-of-9 from long range, 6-of-6 from the line, five rebounds, a career-high six assists and three steals.
Oliver followed Bilney with 17 tallies and three assists. Richmond, ranked second in the country in free-throw percentage, went a pristine 16-of-16 from the charity stripe. The Spiders hit a season-high 12 three-point shots, the most long-range buckets since Jan. 8, 2011 against GW. (The Spiders also made 12 three-pointers).
Richmond led 32-30 at the break after a slow start, but picked up the pace shortly into the last frame. The Spiders outscored GW 42-27 in the second half as they improved to 7-2 at the Robins Center.
Richmond plays four of its next five games on the road, starting with UMass Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Amherst.
