Ron Jones Announced as Assistant Track & Field Coach

RICHMOND, Va. - After six years at VCU as an assistant, Ron Jones returns to the University of Richmond where he served as assistant coach from 2000-2004. He will work primarily with the sprints, hurdles, jumps and multi's groups.
"Steve and I are thrilled to have Ron back on staff. He has tremendous experience, knows the University of Richmond and this city along with what it takes to win," said head coach Lori Taylor. " He understands the dynamics of coaching athletes to achieve their best."
The Richmond, Va. native anchored down recruiting in the Tri-Cities area for the Rams producing CAA Champions in Davion Lambert (Varina), James Frierson (Highland Springs) and DeAngelo Wilson (Prince Edward County) who all three earned CAA Most Outstanding Performer honors during their careers.
"His competitiveness shows in his ability to recruit athletes that are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to achieve the success we want for this program. We look forward to him rejoining our staff, " said Taylor.
Jones competed and coached at Virginia Commonwealth University. In his six seasons with the Rams, he guided 29 CAA champions, 28 NCAA First Round qualifiers and 8 NCAA National Championship participants and in 2006 helped guide the Rams to their second CAA title in school history and followed that with three consecutive years in the top three.
Prior to joining the University of Richmond staff in 2000, Jones was an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth University and Lloyd C. Bird High School.
As a student-athlete he excelled at VCU. He served as the Rams team captain from 1993-1996 and led the team to four conference team titles (1994 Metro Conference Outdoor T&F Champions, 1995 Metro Conference Indoor T&F Champions, 1995 Metro Conference Outdoor T&F Champions, 1996 Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor T&F Champions).
Jones was named "Most Valuable Performer" three times for his performances at the conference outdoor championships in 1993, 1995, and 1996. During his career he won more than 7 events at the conference championships and continues to hold numerous school records at VCU. He also earned All-East honors in the 200M and 4X400M relay and was ranked in the top 20 nationally in the Long Jump. During his senior year he received the prestigious "RAM Award" which is presented to the senior with the "Best College Career" while attending the university.
