02/26/2012 | Men's Basketball
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Richmond overcame an early 16-point deficit to lead by three in the second half, before coming up just short in a 65-57 loss at Xavier Saturday.
The Spiders led 40-37 after a three-pointer by Darien Brothers with 12:17 left and only trailed by three with under a minute to play before four-straight free throws for Xavier pushed the lead to seven with 23 seconds remaining.
Brothers scored 15 points, making 6-of-11 field goals to lead the Spiders. Freshman Kendall Anthony scored 10 points, making 5-of-9 field goals and dishing out two assists.
Sophomores Derrick Williams and Cedrick Lindsay and junior Greg Robbins each scored seven points.
The Spiders overcame a scoreless drought over the first 10 minutes of the game to shoot 47.9 percent for the game.
Xavier grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and converted them to 11 second-chance points.
Richmond was looking to become the first team to win at Cintas Center three times and put a scare into the sellout crowd of 10,250 for the second-straight visit. The Spiders lost to Xavier 78-76 in double-overtime two years ago in their last visit to Cincinnati.
The Spiders (15-15, 6-9 Atlantic 10) wrap-up the regular season on Wednesday hosting Dayton for Senior Night.
