Spiders Fall To No. 3 Wake Forest In Season Opener

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Meghan Hayden scored her first collegiate goal but Richmond fell to No. 3 Wake Forest, 4-1, Friday night in Blacksburg.
The Demon Deacons got on the board first in the 26th minute off a deflection from Ally Berry and Marisa Park to Kristen Meier. The Deacs would score again when Rachel Nuzzolese scored unassisted at the 38:45 mark.
Richmond got its first score of the season by Hayden, who lasered the goal through the net at the 64-minute mark, off a Leighanne Baxter pass to cut the deficit to 2-1 with less than 30 minutes remaining.
Wake Forest would respond with two tallies to close the game at the eventual score of 4-1.
Richmond had eight shots led by Hayden, Crystal Koczot and Kristen Lybert who had two shots apiece. Andrea Young had two saves in goal. The Spiders conclude tournament play Sunday at 2 p.m. against tournament host No. 22 Virginia Tech.
