FARMVILLE, Va. - The Richmond women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to Longwood in a closely-contested two-overtime road match on Friday in nearby Farmville.
Sophomore midfielder Ashley Williams netted her first score of the season in the 78th minute before the Lancers' Lindsey Ottavio secured her second of the night in the second-overtime period.
Williams scored the tally off a header from a corner kick by a feed from Natalie LeClair. Williams skied high for the ball and connected with a header to laser the shot into the right side of the goal to equalizer the score at 1-1 with just under 12 minutes to play.
Longwood had previously scored at the 64-minute mark on an unassisted Ottavio tally to take a 1-0 lead. Richmond was the clear aggressor in the second frame, rattling off 11 shots to the Lancers' three but could not take away the game-winner.
The first overtime was played closely, with Longwood securing two shots to the Spiders' one. Longwood recorded the victory in the 100th minute when Ottavio broke free when the ball was loose in the box and scored.
The Spiders outshot Longwood 17-8, with LeClair leading the charge with four shots. Williams and Jensen Smith each had three tries apiece.
Richmond won corners, 8-3, while Andrea Young had three saves in the net.
The Spiders return to action Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. as they take on the Tribe of William & Mary in Williamsburg.
