11/03/2013 | Women's Soccer
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Richmond women's soccer team fell to George Washington, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
“We gave it all we had,” said head coach Peter Albright. “GW scored on two restarts and we couldn't produce enough attack. Sorry to see it end, this is a great group.”
The Spiders (6-9-3, 3-4-1) fought hard throughout the game, but were unable to sneak one of their ten shots by Colonials goalkeeper Nicole Ulrick. Junior Violet Miller led the Spiders taking three shots. Jensen Smith and Erin Layne also drew attention from the Colonials attempting two shots each.
George Washington (7-5-5. 3-3-2) struck first at the 33:19 mark when Brooke Bean shot a free kick just outside the top left of the box. Later on in the 80th minute Elizabeth Casey sealed the game for the Colonials from 30 yards out on a free kick that just snuck in to the top left corner.
Richmond came into this game flying high after beating cross-town rival VCU 3-0 and needed a strong showing against GW to claim a spot in the A-10 Championships.
The Colonials barely outshot Richmond, 14-10, but had to work hard against a Spider defense that gave it their all. Freshman Devin O'Brien made eight saves in goal.
Although the season is over for the Spiders they have a lot to be proud of and have a solid foundation built looking forward to next year.
