UR Pep Band In Search Of New Name
12/16/2013 | General, The New Robins Center
The New Robins Center not only is home to Spider Basketball, but also the new UR Pep Band – which is looking for a new name to match its fresh, exciting sound and presence at Richmond basketball games.
The Athletics Department is enlisting the help of Spiders fans to suggest a new, memorable name for the UR Pep Band. Fans can go to the Spider Athletics Facebook and @SpiderAthletics Twitter pages to submit their pep band names. The winner of the Name the UR Pep Band Contest will receive two courtside seats to the grand opening of the New Robins Center when Richmond plays Dayton on Jan. 18.
During the off-season, the UR Pep Band was hard at work jamming away with several new members. With the help of the UR Athletics Department and Department of Music, many exciting changes were made to enhance the pep band's sound and presence at Spider basketball games.
The core of the UR Pep Band for the past five years consisted of various members of the popular, award-winning Richmond band, No BS Brass. Last summer, UR Pep Band Director David Hood, also a member of No BS Brass and the Richmond Symphony, used his musical connections within the city of Richmond to grow the core of the pep band to include 16 area professional musicians. Now, the UR Pep Band includes star power from some of the most popular and dynamic acts in Richmond such as RVA Big Band, Bio Ritmo, Brunswick, Marcus Tenney Trio, The Big Payback, The Blue Tips, Boba Seth, Mountain Goats, Fight the Big Bull, The Ernies and Butcher Brown.
The UR Pep band also enhanced its sound by doubling the size of each brass section, adding a bass guitar, moving the location to smack-dab in the middle of the Richmond Rowdies (the student section) and recruiting a musically talented core of University of Richmond students. With the increased sound, enthusiasm and new location at the New Robins Center, the UR Pep Band has been grabbing the attention of Richmond fans, visitors and the local music scene.
“The changes made to the UR Pep Band have been energizing,” Hood said. “We're proud to feature some amazing musicians who are among the best the city of Richmond has to offer. There is a great, new electricity and energy in the New Robins Center, and we feel like we are really adding to it. Mixing some of the city's most talented musicians with UR's students makes for a unique arrangement, one that allows the students to learn from professionals while helping create an electric atmosphere.”
