Richmond Earns Runner-Up Honors At Pinehurst
03/12/2013 | Men's Golf
PINEHURST, N.C. - The University of Richmond Spiders men's golf team used a final round team score of 282 (-2) to surge up the leaderboard and finish the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in second place with a 54-hole total of 888 (+40). The No. 43-ranked Ball State Cardinals won the 16-team event with a score of 885 (+37).
"It was a great week for the Spiders," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said following the round. "The team hung around and got into a position to make a run for the title. It was a little bit of a different day for us - we had a player get real sick and had to withdraw during the round. We also had one of our seniors, Nick Austin, injure his knee during the second round. He was able to fight through and post a score for us."
Senior Daniel Walker had one of the finest rounds in program history on Tuesday, carding a final round 65 (-6) to end the tournament in third place with a total of 216 (+4). Walker ended the Pinehurst Intercollegiate with rounds of 74-77-65.
The 65 (-6) tied the school record for lowest number of strokes in a round, while the 6-under is tied for the second lowest total in Richmond history. The top-10 finish is the fourth this season for Walker and the 14th of his illustrious Spider career.
"Daniel really had a great day," Decker remarked. "He is a great putter and was able to give himself a lot of opportunities for birdie today. It was great to climb the leader board in the final round. Just another step in the right direction for this team."
Sophomore Colin McDade also went under par on Tuesday for Richmond, carding a final round 69 (-2). McDade ended the event in a tie for ninth place with a total of 222 (+10), recording his third top-10 of the season.
Tying his teammate for ninth place on Tuesday was freshman David Germann. The rookie shot a final round 70 (-1) to end the tournament with a score of 222 (+10), notching his second top-10 of the year.
Senior Nick Austin ended the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in a tie for 31st with a total of 229 (+17), while sophomore Austin Romeo tied for 84th playing as an individual with a score of 244 (+32).
The Richmond Spiders men's golf team will be back on the course on March 24-26 when the team heads to Williamsburg to play in the C&F Bank Intercollegiate.
