Final Seconds Turn Back Spiders In A-10 Tournament
03/14/2013 | Men's Basketball
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Richmond men's basketball team had a three-point lead with 4.7 seconds left, but a bizarre finish led to eight Charlotte free throws and a 68-63 49er win in the First Round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Barclays.
Richmond led 63-60 and chose to foul Charlotte to prevent the 49ers from trying a game-tying three-pointer. Pierria Henry made the first free throw and as replays clearly show, Charlotte's Willie Clayton's arm wrapped around the head of Richmond junior Derrick Williams. Williams pushed Clayton off of him and was immediately whistled not just for a foul, but a technical foul by referee Jeff Janoski.
Instead of needing to miss the second free throw, Charlotte now had three free throws and the ball. They made all three to take a 64-63 lead.
Then on the inbound, Richmond's Cedrick Lindsay appeared to foul Pierria and then Greg Robbins did foul him. After getting hit, Pierria threw up a half court heave and Janoski awarded him three shots for a shooting foul with 2.8 seconds left.
On the heels of the back-to-back controversial calls, Richmond head coach Chris Mooney was assessed two technical fouls and ejected from the game. Charlotte proceeded to shoot seven more free throws, making four to seal the victory.
In total, the 49ers made 8-of-11 free throws in the final 4.7 seconds.
With the setback, the Spiders fall to 18-14 on the season and will now await its postseason fate. Charlotte improves to 21-10 on the year and will face the No. 1-seeded Saint Louis Billikens on Friday.
Junior guard Cedrick Lindsay had a team-high 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor, while freshman Terry Allen continued his great play, chipping in 14 points to go with nine rebounds for the Spiders.
Williams had 13 points on 3-of-3 shooting for the Spiders, while senior Darien Brothers added 10.
