Lovette Leads Spiders To Pinehurst Challenge Title
04/02/2013 | Women's Golf
PINEHURST, N.C. – Senior Caroline Lovette and the University of Richmond Spiders women's golf team made history at the Pinehurst Challenge on Tuesday afternoon, as Lovette earned individual medalist honors to help lead the Spiders to the team title.
With the victory, Richmond has now won two tournaments in the same season for the first time in program history. Under first-year head coach Maggie Will, the Spiders won the Wendy's Invitational earlier this season.
This week, Richmond carded team rounds of 296-298-305 to win the 19-team Pinehurst Challenge with a score of 899 (+35). College of Charleston finished as the runners up with a total of 903 (+39).
“Really proud of them for their effort,” Will said following the tournament. “Everybody contributed to this win and the team is really coming together for the championship season.”
The individual title is the second in the Lovette's career, as the Davidsville, Pa. native won her first collegiate tournament – the Spider Invitational – her freshman season.
“Caroline practiced a lot this winter in freezing temperatures,” Will said of her senior. “It's what you have to do to make it happen and I'm really happy to see the work pay off.”
After shooting a first round score of 76 (+4), Lovette responded with two fantastic rounds en route to earning medalist honors. The senior ended Monday with a second round score of 71 (-1) and then cruised to victory with a final round 72 (E). Lovette's 54-hole score of 219 (+3) is tied for the third-best three-round score in Richmond history.
Classmate Courtney Rousse also had a great showing at the Pinehurst Challenge, earning her second top-10 of the season. Rousse tied for fifth place overall with a three-round total of 224 (+8).
Senior Tracy Martin made it three Spiders in the top-20, tying for 13th with a score of 226 (+10). Martin has been spectacular this season, earning a top-20 finish in all eight tournaments so far this year.
Sophomore Eliza Breed tied for 31st with a score of 233 (+17), while junior Lauren Conder tied for 39th with a total of 234 (+18).
The Richmond Spiders women's golf team will be back on the course this weekend when the team heads south to Wallace, N.C. to play in the UNCW Seahawk Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
