Mike McGuire Named Head Coach At Radford

RADFORD, Va. -- Assistant coach Mike McGuire has been named the head coach at Radford University announced Wednesday.
“We are extremely excited to have Mike McGuire join the Radford University family,” said Radford Director of Athletics Robert Lineburg. “Mike has very strong relationships with high school coaches and AAU coaches in the Commonwealth of Virginia as well as nationally, which is crucial in the recruiting process. He has also been a very successful high school coach winning back-to-back State Championships. This experience along with his five years as an assistant coach at Richmond in the Atlantic 10 Conference makes him an excellent fit for the Radford University women's basketball program.”
McGuire helped lead Richmond to a 101-60 record and five-straight postseason appearances in his years on the Spiders' women's basketball staff.
In a Wednesday afternoon press conference, the former assistant coach at Richmond was introduced by Lineburg to the media, Radford University students, faculty, staff and fans.
McGuire spent the last five years on the staff of head coach Michael Shafer at Richmond, where the Spiders had three 20 or more win seasons, made five-straight postseason appearances and advanced to the A-10 Championship final during his tenure.
"I am truly excited for Mike," said Shafer. "What a great opportunity to be the head coach at Radford. Mike has proven over his career to be a very capable coach, but more importantly a humble winner. In Mike's five years at Richmond, we have experienced five-straight years of post season play. That is not a coincidence. Radford is getting a tireless worker, a great basketball mind, a very good recruiter and an even better person. I look for Radford to immediately benefit from Mike's leadership, as he will bring credibility and a winning attitude to their program. I have been honored to work with Mike and feel fortunate to call him a friend. This is the right move, going back to the area where he is from and it is time for Mike to have his own program. Radford made a great choice!"
In 2012-13, McGuire received national recognition when Florida Basketball Magazine named him one of the top assistant coaches in the nation. McGuire also received this honor the year before when National Basketball Insider named him one of the Top-14 Mid-Major assistant coaches in the country.
Prior to his move to Richmond, McGuire led Hidden Valley High School to back-to-back Virginia Group AA state basketball titles in 2007 and 2008. He posted a 55-5 overall record leading the Titans. In those two seasons, McGuire twice earned Virginia Group AA State Coach of the Year, Regional Coach of the Year, and River Ridge District Coach of the Year honors.
Previous to his four years at Hidden Valley, McGuire served as the head coach at his alma mater, William Byrd High School. During his tenure, he compiled a 50-47 overall record and led the Terriers to their first regional post-season berth in seven years. In six years as a head coach at the high school level, McGuire accumulated a 105-52 record.
McGuire is a 2000 graduate of Roanoke College where he spent one season after matriculating as the assistant coach for the men's basketball program. In that role, he served as the recruiting coordinator and junior varsity head coach. The Maroons posted a 17-10 record in his only season as an assistant.
