Men's Golf Takes 4th At VCU Shootout

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – Senior Jack Wilkes tied for seventh at 2-under to lead the Richmond men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the VCU Shootout, played Monday and Tuesday at Hermitage Country Club.
The Spiders, who won the season-opening Marshall Invitational, finished at 9-over-par 873 to finish fourth. Richmond was two shots ahead of Old Dominion (875), six shots ahead of Maryland (879) and seven better than VCU (880).
The Spiders finished ahead of three Atlantic 10 rivals, VCU, George Mason and George Washington.
“We played great in the first round, and played well in the final two rounds,” Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. “We're definitely off to a good start to the fall season.”
Wilkes tied for seventh at 2-under 214 on par-72, 6,955-yard course, posting his second-straight top-10 finish to start the year. He opened the tournament with a 4-under-par 68 on Monday morning. Three of Wilkes' six rounds this fall are in the 60s.
“Jack is off to a great start to his senior year,” Decker said. “He's really playing confident golf.”
Junior Danny Pizetoski, who won the season-opening Marshall Invitational, finished tied for 19th at 2-over 218. Pizetoski shot a 2-under 70 in the first round, a 1-over 73 in the second round and a 75 Tuesday.
Junior Colin McDade tied for 25th at 220 (71-73-76) and sophomore David Germann tied for 37th at 223 (77-76-70). Sophomore John David Sanderson tied for 55th at 230 (77-74-79).
Three Spiders played as individuals and one posted a top-3 finish. Freshman Keegan Hoff shot a 5-under 211 to place third in the event. Hoff shot a 2-under 70 in the first round, an even-par 72 in the second round and a 3-under 69 on Tuesday.
Also playing as individuals, freshman Jason Park tied for 37th at 223 (74-76-73) and junior Austin Romeo tied for 69th at 238.
Richmond returns to action Oct. 12-13 at the Temple University Invitational at Philmont Country Club.
