UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Kendall Anthony led four Spiders in double-figures as Richmond overcame an eight-point first-half deficit to defeat Dayton 73-64 Saturday in front of a sellout crowd for the Grand Opening of the New Robins Center.
Anthony made 11-of-12 free throws and senior Cedrick Lindsay made 11-of-13 and finished with 17 points as the Spiders overcame 30-percent first half shooting to improve to 12-6 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic 10.
The Spiders shot a season-high 91.4 percent from the foul line, making 32-of-35 free throws as they improved to 11-2 in Atlantic 10 home openers.
“That was a really big win,” Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. “Dayton is as good as any opponent we've played. It was a team effort, we weren't great offensively, but our aggression at both ends helped us. I thought we made them work and when we had the lead in the last couple of minutes, they weren't able to get any easy shots to kind of cut into it.”
Richmond has now won six-straight against Dayton (13-5, 1-2 Atlantic 10) in the Robins Center. The Spiders have won five of the last six and eight of the last 11 overall against the Flyers.
“The atmosphere was incredible in the Robins Center and you cannot underestimate how much that helps a college basketball game,” Mooney said.
Sophomore Alonzo Nelson-Ododa scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and tied a career-high with six blocked shots.
Sophomore Terry Allen had 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, freshman ShawnDre' Jones had seven points, making his fourth three-pointer in the last two games and sophomore Trey Davis had six points and seven rebounds.
Richmond was only our-rebounded by Dayton 30-29 and held Dayton to just six second-chance points, while collecting 13 second-chance points of their own on 12 offensive rebounds.
The Spiders had just six turnovers on the game, while forcing Dayton into 14 turnovers.
Richmond hosts nationally ranked Massachusetts on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the New Robins Center.
