Riefner's Free Kick Powers 1-0 Road WIn
10/12/2014 | Women's Soccer
Junior Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia) fired a free kick in from 27 yards out off the keeper in the 82nd minute and Richmond remained unbeaten in Atlantic 10 Conference play in a 1-0 road victory at Davidson Saturday night at Alumni Field. The win pushes UR to an 8-5-1 mark overall, 2-0-1 in the A-10. Davidson slips to 4-9-1 overall, 1-2 in the league. Richmond is the second team in the A-10 to get to a second win in three conference games and sits in second place alone in the league standings, with five left to play.
The shutout is the Spiders' second of the season and second in a row. Richmond has not allowed a goal in the last 226:17 of play.
The goal was Riefner's eighth of the season and her team-leading fifth go-ahead goal of 2014. It was her second game-winning goal of the season. She pulled back into a tie for third in the conference in total goals scored.

UR - Riefner (8), free kick, 82' |
“We have a few options on that kind of kick,” said Riefner after the game. “Meaghan (Carrigan), Shannon (Colligan) and I talked right before the kick. I saw an opening and said, 'I got this,” and I think the wetness of the grass helped me a little.”
Riefner fired a low shot just to the left of the defensive wall, kicking off, up and over keeper Rachel Locke and into the back left corner of the net. There was just 8"06 remaining on the clock in regulation. The Spiders were able to play out the half to capture the road win.
The teams played without a goal in the opening half, but each team hit the crossbar in the first 45 minutes. Junior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Connecticut) fired a shot from 25 yards out that just caught the crossbar with just under two minutes remaining in the opening period.
“It was the hardest game we had all year,” said head coach Peter Albright. “We had a hard time, especially in the first half, getting good looks at goal. Davidson did a great job of doing what they do, but we did a great job in the second half of getting the ball forward. Olivia (Aha) made a good run to get the foul and Riefner made a good decision from out of the set. Emily Drummond was the woman of the match for me as we bothered their primary scorer, and our young defense and freshman keeper are making better decisions for us.”
Rookie goalkeeper Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) keeps an unblemished record on the season with the win, improving to 3-0-1. Locke took the loss. She has all 14 decisions for the Wildcats this season.
Both teams had five shots in the first period and UR led 11-7 in shots in the contest.
The Spiders will remain on the road next weekend, playing across town at VCU Friday night at 7 p.m. before heading up to George Washington next Sunday at 1 p.m. for its final regular-season road contest.
NOTES: The goal for Richmond was the 30th for the season, eighth-most in program history for a single season... The Spiders pitched back-to-back shutout wins since late September of 2012... Richmond remains undefeated (4-0-1) in the all-time series against Davidson. This was the first-ever meeting for the programs as members of the same conference, as the Wildcats became an A-10 member on July 1 of this year.
