10/18/2014 | Women's Soccer
Richmond and VCU played 110 minutes, but neither team could muster a goal in a 0-0 tie Friday night at Sports Backers Stadium. The tie gives Richmond three-straight shutouts against its opposition and 336:27 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal. The Spiders are 8-5-2 overall and one of two remaining unbeaten in the league at 2-0-2. VCU is 6-4-4 overall, 2-1-1 in league games.
The two teams played a physical match, with each side getting quality chances at the net. VCU led with seven shots at the half to Richmond's four.
The second half was much of the same. Richmond was awarded a penalty kick that glanced off the crossbar and keeper Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) made a diving save on the counter attack. The Rams had six more shots in the second half, while the Spiders had four.

“Over the years, we've had so many kinds of games with VCU,” said UR head coach Peter Albright.
“They were good and I thought we were good. Katie and our defense continued to play really well. VCU has some special players and put us under some intense pressure. I am really proud of the Richmond Spiders tonight and am not disappointed to get a point out of this in the A-10.”
The Spiders came out firing in the first overtime, getting the only three shots of the first 10-minute extra period, the last of which was Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia) one-on-one with the keeper, who got a fingertip on and tipped away a shot with 16 seconds remaining.
The second overtime had fewer chances, but a few buildups for both teams that could not result in a score.
In addition to the team's streak, Brennan has not lost since being inserted in goal for the Spiders, as her record remains an unblemished 3-0-2.
Richmond will complete the road portion of their A-10 schedule on Sunday afternoon, with a 3:30 p.m. contest at George Washington.
