Carrigan Earns Third A-10 Rookie Of The Week
10/27/2014 | Women's Soccer
For the third time this season, redshirt freshman Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) has earned the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week honor.
In Richmond's lone action of the week, Carrigan scored two goals and assisted on the third in the Spiders' 4-3 home loss to Dayton in double overtime Saturday night at Robins Stadium.
Carrigan got the Spiders on the board in the second minute of the contest, the fastest goal in a match this season for UR. After Dayton tied the match in the 29th minute, Carrigan again found the back of the net in the next minute to retake the lead.
After UD scored twice to take the lead in the second half, Carrigan sent a pass of the right sideline to freshman Lexi Prillaman (Magnolia, Delaware), who was able to launch it in from the corner of the 18 to tie the game with less than three minutes in regulation to force overtime. It was the latest game-tying goal this season for the Spiders, and the latest in regulation.
It was the fifth time this season that she has scored twice in a single game, one away from tying the school record for multi-goal performances. Carrigan is second in the league in goals (13) and points (29).
This is her third time winning an A-10 weekly award. She took the honor on September 8 and 29 previously this season, both times she posted a two-goal game that week. This is Richmond's fifth Rookie of the Week honor, with keeper Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) winning the award on October 13 and midfielder Olivia Aha on September 22. That combines with junior Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia) winning Co-Player of the Week on September 22.
The Spiders are second in the league in goal-scoring, finding the net 33 times this season, more than twice as many goals as last year's squad. Richmond will host a pair of contests to finish out the regular season. UR will be visited by Massachusetts Friday night at 7 p.m. and Rhode Island Sunday at 1 p.m. Richmond will have Senior Night prior to the UMass game.
