
WBB Cruises Past Providence, 75-59, In Season Opener

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Five Spiders in double figures led the Richmond women's basketball team over the Providence Friars, 75-59, in both teams season opener Friday night at the Robins Center.
Senior Liz Brown led the way for the Spiders (1-0) with a career-high 17 points and eight rebounds, while junior Bria Powell also set a career high with 15 points and two assists. Senior Keri Soppe and sophomore Janelle Hubbard both knocked down 12 points apiece, while Soppe tied her career high with seven boards.
Redshirt-senior Genevieve Okoro capped off the double-digit scoring for the Spiders with 11 points and six rebounds, while also tallying three assists.
Richmond outrebounded Providence (0-1) 37-33, forced 25 Friar turnovers that it turned into 10 points and scored 14 points in the paint. The Spiders shot 45.6 percent from the field and went 6-for-13 (46.2%) from behind the arc.
Racing out to a 5-0 lead to start the day, the Spiders dominated from start to finish as they were in control for the entire contest. Richmond led by as many as 18 points, which came four minutes into the second half.
The Spiders will return to the court Sunday, Nov. 16 to host Georgetown at 2 p.m.
