Twice a month, we'll visit with a different Spider student-athlete in the Spider Spotlight.
Meet Alicia…
Career aspirations: Anesthesiologist
Three words to describe yourself: Selfless, Loving and Outgoing.
Best or most memorable moment as a member of your Spider program: One day in the first week of summer school KRAKM (Kylie, Rennie, Alicia, Karleigh and Micaela) was asked to bring down the ball racks and pads for practice. Keep in mind that we know nothing about really anything and need assistance doing the simplest tasks. We assumed the elevator was the way to go because the racks couldn't possibly go down the stairs. However, with much frustration, we could not get that elevator to work. None of our elder teammates were in sight because they were downstairs ready to go with the other coaches. KRAKM was afraid to be late so we took a group vote and decided to just walk the pads and ball racks down the stairs. To say it was a challenge was an understatement and it took FOREVER. So, after that struggle, we finally made it to the gym where our teammates and coaches asked us why we were late and what took us so long. We told them the story and all they did was laugh at us. Especially Genevieve. We eventually were taught how to use the elevator after that.
The best nickname on the team: I'm not sure if you mean the best nickname for myself or the best nickname overall so Ill give you both. Gen calls me Dum Dum -_- literally all the time, but I go by Leesh usually. As far as the team… Lauren Tolson goes by Swaggie. I came up with that so I think its pretty great and Beacher calls Karleigh sweet tea, North Carolina, Salisbury, Molly, etc. Really any nickname that has to deal with the south she's called that.
Strengths: Basketball-wise: I'm a shooter, I will rebound, I hustle after every ball, and I'm constantly talking. Personally: I work hard, I'm driven, and most of all I love taking care of people and I know how to do it. I'm pretty good at figuring people out, what they like and dislike, and making them smile by a random act of kindness. I put people before myself always.
Toughest opponents: Basketball-wise: I have no idea because I haven't played yet! Personally: Myself
Working to improve: Basketball-wise: my driving ability, my handles, and becoming a better one-on-one defender. Personally: Self confidence and having patience.
Best sports memory: I was playing against Micaela Parson in a game at the very beginning of the season my senior year of high school. Coach Doyle was in the stands watching the both of us. With two seconds left on the clock to end the first quarter, my teammate outletted the ball from under our basket. I caught the ball around the middle of the key, took one dribble, and with my right foot on the free throw line and my other leg in the air, I launched the ball at the basket. It went in swish and wrapped around in the net. It was the first time I ever made a ¾ shot and I wish it was for the game winner, but regardless it was pretty great and I was ecstatic Coach Doyle was able to see it.
Favorite meal: Pretty much everything at Thanksgiving: turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing and green bean casserole.
Favorite ice cream: Chocolate fudge brownie.
On your playlist: A mix of everything, I don't listen to anyone specific. Some include Chris Brown, Jason Derulo, Iggy Azalea, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, etc.
Most embarrassing thing on your playlist: Justin Bieber.
If you have one wish: To cure cancer.
What most people don't know about you: Carving pumpkins is one of my favorite activities of all time. I LOVE IT! This year I have carved nine by myself (:
If you could go on any game show: Wheel of Fortune.
Hidden Talent: I have always been very flexible and can still do a backbend!
Dream car: Audi Q5.
If you could travel anywhere in the world: Australia.
Favorite class: Fundamentals of Stage Makeup - I have some great pictures!
Pets: Angus- Labra doodle, Black Cat- Eli, Fish- Spleen (Yes, Spleen is his name lol)
Hero: Genevieve Okoro. It has been an honor getting to play with her for one year and she is not only an amazing basketball player, but she is just as amazing off the court as my friend. I'm blessed I've been able to experience this time with her and she's taught me more about this program, myself, basketball and life in general that I ever thought I would be able to. I love her lots!
Favorite childhood TV show: My favorite when I was really, really little was Barney and Clifford the Big Red Dog. But as I got a little older, Drake and Josh!
If you could have dinner with anyone dead or alive: Coach Doyle and Natalie.
If you could have any superpower: Teleporting! The hills of U of R are absolutely killer. :/
