HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Redshirt freshman forward Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) was named 2014 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Rookie of the Year and First-Team All State, while junior teammate Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS) landed on the Second Team, named Friday.
Carrigan, also the 2014 Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year, was the second-leading freshman scorer in the nation and posted 14 goals, tied for third in the conference overall. Her 33 total points (she added five assists) were third in the league and third-most in a single season in program history. Her five multi-goal games are second-most in team history in a season. Carrigan already sits 10th in program history for goals scored already.
Riefner was the only player in the A-10 with at least nine goals and nine assists (she finished with exactly that many in each category) and ended sixth in the league with her 27 points. She was fifth in goal scoring and fourth in assists in the A-10 for the season. After her three Spider seasons, Riefner sits seventh all-time in assists per game and tied for seventh in total assists.
Richmond won nine games (9-9-2) and scored 37 goals, tied for fourth-most in program history.
VaSID names 27 all-state teams in 15 sports each year, as well as an academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University (Division I) and College (all non-Division I schools) Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
