Pizetoski Wins Pinehurst Intercollegiate
03/11/2014 | Men's Golf
PINEHURST, N.C. – Richmond junior Danny Pizetoski won his second tournament of the season, shooting a 1-under-par 70 Tuesday to take the Pinehurst Intercollegiate by three shots.
Pizetoski shot a 2-under 69 in the opening round on Pinehurst No. 8, a 5-over 76 Monday on Pinehurst No. 2 and finished the tourney with another under-par round on No. 8.
"I am really proud of Danny," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "He won this tournament by staying patient and not letting a difficult golf course get the best of him. Danny's short-game was fantastic around the always treacherous Pinehurst green complexes."
Pizetoski's 3-under 215 led the Spiders to a fifth-place finish out of 10 teams. The Spiders finished the tournament at 917 after a final round of 10-over 294.
He became the first Spider to win two tournaments in his career since Jordan Utley won tournaments in 2006 and 2007. Pizetoski is the first Richmond player to win two tournaments in the same school year since Joe Horowitz won the Liberty Classic and Golden Horsehoe in 2000-01.
The Davidson, N.C. native has won two of the six tournaments in the 2013-14 season. He won the season-opening Marshall Invitational in September, tying for the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in school history (-6).
"Winning twice in a season is a great accomplishment," Decker said. "He is in a good place with his golf and I know he still has some more goals to work towards as the season goes on."
This is the third top-10 finish of Pizetoski's career and his third top-20 finish of the 2013-14 season.
Junior Austin Romeo tied for 31st at 23-over 235. Senior Jack Wilkes and sophomore David Germann tied for 37th at 238. Sophomore John David Sanderson finished 41st at 239.
Freshman Keegan Hoff, playing as an individual, finished in a tie for 25th at 21-over 233 (76-82-75).
The Spiders return to action at the Irish Creek Collegiate, April 5-6 at Irish Creek Country Club in Kannapolis, N.C.
