BROOKLYN, N.Y. – A career-high 27 points from sophomore Terry Allen helped lead the Spiders to a 76-64 win over Duquesne in the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Thursday night at the Barclays Center.
The Spiders (19-13) led by as many as 21 points as they cruised into the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals, where they will meet city-rival VCU on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Richmond had an 11-point second-half lead on the Rams last Thursday in the Robins Center, before losing 56-50.
With the win Thursday against Duquesne, the Spiders have now won seven of their last 11 Atlantic 10 Tournament games.
Allen made 11-of-20 field goals and 4-of-7 three-pointers as he scored in double-figures for the second-straight game and seventh time in the last 10 games. He also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists, had three steals and two blocks.
"Sometimes he makes things look so easy, that you think that when he has 15 points, you think he had 25 and when he has eight rebounds you think he could have 15," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "I think he playing with confidence right now. He knows how important he is to us and the different things he can do on the floor are realy impressive for a guy his size."
Richmond junior Kendall Anthony scored 23 points for his third-straight 20-point game. He has scored 20 or more points in four of the last five games and eight of the last 11.
Anthony made two three-pointers, which gives him 81 three-pointers, just four trifectas from tying Richmond's single-season school record.
Sophomore Alonzo Nelson-Ododa matched a career high with 13 points, making 4-of-6 field goals and grabbing seven rebounds.
This was the second convincing win over the No. 10 seed Dukes for Richmond this season. The Spiders defeated Duquesne 75-58 in Pittsburgh on Feb. 12.
The Spider defense held the opposition under 70 points for the sixth-straight game and it was the 17th time in 32 games this season that Richmond has held the opponent to 64 points or less.
The Dukes only had 34 points with 10:27 left and the Spiders leading by 21. With the large lead, the Spiders were able to rest Anthony and Allen. Richmond is playing primarily with a seven-man rotation after losing both seniors for the season on Feb. 1.
