Spider Soccer Alumni Back to Campus for 2014 Alumni Game
Richmond soccer hosted its 2014 Alumni Game this past Saturday, welcoming back over 20 Spider alums. Teams were split based on graduation year, and the current players and alumni enjoyed joining forces to compete for 90 minutes.
“Celebrating 18 years of Women's Soccer here at UR, this was the biggest turnout ever,” said head coach Peter Alrbright, who has been at the helm during the program's span. “We are working on making stronger connections between our current players and our alums, hoping to use the success and experience of our graduates to help our current players transition to professional careers and life after college.”
The match ended with the odd-numbered graduate years edging the even-numbered graduate years by a score of 3-2, despite a questionable tying goal by the even year graduates that was called back by the officials.
While the game's final result might be up in the air, there was no questioning the good-natured competition and social bonding between the years of Spider Soccer, current players and alumni.
“The odd year/even year format of the game allowed current and former players to play together and, hopefully, begin lasting relationships that will bear fruit in years to come.”
After the match, the alumni and coaching staff enjoyed time together to catch up with old teammates and players, with the alumni from different graduation years able to come together as well.
“It was wonderful seeing so many great players from the past and catch up with them, continued Albright. “We had a blast!”
