SOUTHPORT, N.C. – The University of Richmond Spiders women's golf team got off to a solid start on Friday at the 2014 CAA Championship at the St. James Plantation Reserve Club in Southport, N.C.
The Spiders carded a first round team score of 333 (+45) to finish the first day in eighth place. College of Charleston leads the nine-team conference championship with a score of 302 (+14).
“Scores were tough out there today,” Richmond head coach Maggie Will said. “It was really windy, but our team hung in there very well. We had a good practice this afternoon after the round and the team is in good spirits. We're going to have a nice evening tonight and get ready for whatever comes our way tomorrow.”
Leading the way for the Spiders on Friday was senior Lauren Conder, who sits in a tie for second place with a first round score of 75 (+3). Conder played consistent golf all day for Richmond, shooting a 38 on the front nine and a 37 on the back.
“I'm very happy to have had a good first day,” Conder said following her round. “I'm looking forward to a nice next two days here at St. James. Today, I was really focusing on having a solid and consistent start and trying to go from there. My front nine gave me a good start and momentum for the rest of the round.”
Netting three birdies on the round, Conder nearly eagled the par-5 No. 17. On her third shot, her approach nearly holed out, ending just feet away from the pin for an easy tap-in birdie. Playing the back nine first, the senior ended her round well, posting back-to-back birdies on No. 8 and No. 9.
“We're very happy for Lauren and her birdie-birdie finish at the end,” Will remarked. “I'm really happy for her to be in second place.”
Fellow senior Krystin Schwarze ended the first day in a tie for 28th place with a total of 83 (+11). Schwarze, along with the rest of the field, battled high winds and intermittent rain throughout the round. Like Conder, Schwarze put an exclamation point on her round, knocking down a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 9 to end her day.
Junior Eliza Breed is tied for 37th place after 18 holes with a score of 86 (+14). Breed excelled at the end of her day as well, scoring par on the final three holes of her round.
Rounding out Richmond's effort on the first day of the CAA Championship were sophomores Alicia Reggiannini and Kira Kuhnert, who both carded rounds of 89 (+17) to end the day tied for 41st place.
Both players had their best moments on the front nine on Friday. Reggiannini ended her day with three-straight pars, while Kuhnert birdied the par-5 No. 3.
The Richmond Spiders women's golf team will continue play at the 2014 CAA Championship on Saturday morning. Tee times begin tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
