SOUTPORT, N.C. – The University of Richmond Spiders women's golf team wrapped up play at the 2014 CAA Championship on Sunday in Southport, N.C.
The Spiders placed eighth overall in the rain-shortened tournament, shooting a 36-hole team score of 682 (+106). College of Charleston won the conference title with a total of 618 (+42).
“I was proud of how the team battled the really difficult conditions and elements out there today,” Richmond head coach Maggie Will said following the round. “I know Lauren is disappointed with her second nine, but she was right there at the end and we are still very proud of her effort.”
Battling the cold, rain and wind, senior Lauren Conder led the Spider effort on the weekend, finishing in a tie for eighth with a score of 158 (+14). The top-10 finish is the third this year for the senior and the sixth of her career brilliant career.
With her great play at the CAA Championship, Conder ends her four-years at UR ranked third all-time in career stroke average at 78.56. Her season average of 76.13 this year ranks second all-time.
“I was pleased with my first half today, but disappointed with my second half,” Conder said. “I'm so proud to be a Richmond Spider. I feel very blessed to have played here the last four years and I'm so lucky to have said I played here. I'm really happy the way I finished my career here today and I'm so thankful for all the family, friends and support system at the University of Richmond. I wouldn't be the person I am today if it wasn't for UR.”
Senior Krystin Schwarze capped her great Richmond career tying for 29th place at the CAA Championship, finishing with two-round total of 168 (+24). Schwarze did well to avoid the big numbers despite the condition, carding nine pars on her final round.
“Krystin had some really nice tournaments this year for us,” Will remarked. “I know she would have liked to played better here, but that doesn't take away from her great senior season.”
Junior Eliza Breed cut three strokes off her score from Friday, shooting a final round 83 (+11) to tie for 32nd place overall. Breed was excellent on her first nine holes, shooting a 38 (+2), which included six-straight pars on holes No. 12 through No. 16.
Rounding out the Spiders' effort at the CAA Championship were sophomores Kira Kuhnert and Alicia Reggiannini, who both tied for 44th with scores of 187 (+43).
Kuhnert battled back from a tough first nine holes to cut eight strokes off her last nine, carding three pars on her final eight holes. Reggiannini was consistent all day, but excelled on the back nine where she scored a par on No. 15.
