The New Robins Center, which received rave reviews from fans who attended games following a $17 million renovation project this past season, recently received another distinction when it was voted by readers of Athletic Business to grace the cover of the magazine's June issue.
Athletic Business is the trade publication of athletic, fitness and recreation professionals and is widely read throughout college athletics. This was the magazine's 27th Annual "Architectural Showcase" but with a new tradition.
"Architects, schools and facility owners submit their latest and greatest projects and we feature them in our magazine," said Michael Gaio, eMedia Editor of Athletic Business. "For the first time, we allowed our readers to choose the cover. Our staff narrowed the choices to four finalists, then we asked our readers to vote. There were more than 21,000 votes cast and the Robins Center received just more than 50 percent of the total vote."
Inside the June edition, 61 state-of-the-art facilities were featured, including a full-page story on the New Robins Center, detailing the renovations, including the hospitality terraces, video boards, new seating closer to the floor and lighting.
"The Robins Center photo had several appealing design elements — an eye-catching playing surface, well-placed video boards and a unique look for a premium seating area," said Gaio. "It incorporated several arena design elements in one well-composed photo, making it a natural to represent the Architectural Showcase on the cover of Athletic Business."
The architect firm for the Robins Center renovations was Sink Combs Dethlefs of Denver, Colorado, which worked on the Crisler Arena renovation at the University of Michigan, also spotlighted in the June edition of Athletic Business Magazine.
