Spider Soccer Plays At No. 3 Virginia Friday
08/28/2014 | Women's Soccer
After scoring a pair of goals in their first two games, the Richmond Spiders women's soccer program faces their toughest test of the season with a Friday evening contest at No. 3 Virginia.
Richmond split its pair of opening-weekend games, falling 3-2 at Campbell Friday and winning 2-1 Sunday at Longwood. This Virginia game is the third of seven-straight road games to start the season for the Spiders.
Richmond has not scored on Virginia in the previous four meetings, dating back to 2005. Richmond is 1-7-1 in the all-time series against the Cavaliers.
The Spiders have proven to be a more offensive team this season, with the pair of goals in the opening pair of games, already at 25% of last seasons' scoring total. Three different Spiders have found the back of the net, with redshirt freshman Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, S.C.) scoring twice in the Longwood win. All four goals scored by the Spiders this year have given the team the lead in the contest.
The lone Spiders win came in a 4-1 win against the 16th-ranked Cavaliers on October 18, 2001. That win came at Klockner Stadium, the site of Friday's game.
The Cavaliers are off to a 1-0 start after a 3-0 win over Marshall at home last Friday.
This game is the lone contest for the Spiders this week before heading down to Charleston, South Carolina next weekend to compete in a tournament hosted by The Citadel.
