MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – The Richmond men's golf team finished two rounds at the VCU Shootout on Monday, holding steady in ninth place overall.
Competing against teams from around the country at nearby Hermitage Golf Course, the squad started slow in the morning before climbing the leaderboard to a tie for seventh place in the middle of the afternoon's second round.
The Spiders finished Monday with a combined score of 604 (+28) after two rounds, carding two identical scores of 302 in the morning and afternoon.
“The course played really tough today,” head coach Adam Decker said. “The greens dried out and got very firm and fast. We struggled when we missed the greens in the wrong place. We need to do a better job tomorrow of managing the golf course. If we can take advantage of the par fives and do a better job of limiting unforced errors, we will have a much better day tomorrow.”
Senior Danny Pizetoski led the Spiders with rounds of 72 (E) and 73 (+1) to sit tied at seventh overall at +1.
Freshman Matthew Lowe bounced back from an opening round of 75 (+3) to shoot 73 (+1) in round two for a score of 148 (+4), placing him tied for 19th overall heading into Tuesday.
David Germann and Keegan Hoff rounded out the Spider scorers, as Germann shot a 152 (+8) and Hoff finished at 159 (+15). Both players shot 78 (+6) in the afternoon round.
Austin Romeo played as Richmond's fifth golfer, carding a 161 (+17) after rounds of 83 and 73, putting him right behind Hoff.
Individually, the Spiders had several entrants including Jason Park (153, +9), Mark Reilly (156, +12) and Jimmy Davis (160, +16).
Tuesday's final round will begin at 8:45 a.m., and will feature live results on GolfStat.com.
