Carrigan Earns 2nd A-10 Rookie Weekly Honor
09/29/2014 | Women's Soccer
Richmond redshirt freshman Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) was today named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week. This is her second award of the season, first capturing it after her initial two-goal game of the season, and this is the third rookie award handed out to a Spider freshman. Carrigan previously won on September 8. Olivia Aha (Norfolk, Massachusetts) was named Co-Rookie of the Week on September 22.
She was also named the College Sports Madness A-10 Player of the Week.
Carrigan scored goals in both Richmond contests over the weekend. Friday she became the first player this season to score a game-tying goal against Saint Joseph's, when she equalized the match at one each before the Spiders fell late at home.
Sunday, Carrigan scored two goals for the third time this season as the Spiders set a season high with four scores to take out James Madison 4-2 at home. Carrigan pushed her team-leading total to eight goals, which is also tops in the A-10.
Richmond is 5-0 when a Spider scores more than once, and their 22 goals leads the league as conference play begins this coming weekend.
The Spiders travel to Pittsburgh to start league play at Duquesne at 7 p.m. before returning home Sunday to take on St. Bonaventure, with kickoff at 1 p.m. Richmond is 3-1 so far on the home turf.
In addition to Carrigan and Aha, junior Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia) landed on the list of Spider honorees to take home a league weekly honor. Riefner was named Co-Player of the Week on September 22 as the Spiders landed name in both the Player and Rookie of the Week columns for the first time since 2002 and the second time in program history.
