Twice a month, we'll visit with a different Spider student-athlete in the Spider Spotlight.
Did You Know...
• Miller spent the spring semester of her sophomore year studying in the Dominican Republic...She confessed to not being able to speak the language conversantly well and found that immersion was the best way to learn. "My host family did not speak English at all and it took three weeks to be able to talk to them."
• She was the only Spider in the Dominican, so she discovered a lot about herself as well as learning a new language and culture..."I am a more relaxed person afer that trip and I focus more on relationships and experiences than being stressed out about life and school and sports. I find myself more invested in what I am doing when I am doing it than before."
• Miller also taught English as a volunteer while studying abroad, fostering a love for teaching/counseling. She serves as a Spanish tutor on campus for student-athletes at UR.
• She is one of the tri-captains on the Spider Soccer squad this season. "We wanted to take the best parts about captains from the past and try to be different leaders. We want to leave the team a tight-knit group that cares about each other for more reasons than just being a teammate."
• She is a proud member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority on campus.
Meet Violet...
Career Aspirations: I hope to work in an urban education setting as a teacher through Teach for America or as a counselor. I eventually hope to work on policy to improve the quality of our underserved urban public schools in America.
Three words that describe you: Silly, adaptable/flexible and kind.
Toughest Opponents: Virginia and Dayton.
Best Spider Memory: My freshman season in general. We had some sweet wins against Dayton and William and Mary. My favorite memory in the Spider program was following our loss to Dayton in the A-10 tournament semi-finals. After a tough loss, we were able to have the best night all together as a team…with tons of laughter and tears!
Best sports memory: My first soccer state championship on my club team (Braddock Road Azul). We were 11 or 12 years old, and came back to win 2-1 in the last five minutes of the game with two goals. I cannot remember a better sports feeling, since this was my first championship game and the win was sooo sweet.
Favorite meal: Thai food (pad see ew).
Favorite ice cream: Mint Oreo or anything with lots of chocolate!
On your playlist: Everything! But especially rap and jazz.
Most embarrassing thing on your playlist: The soundtrack to "O Brother, Where art Thou?" or the Justin Bieber Christmas Album
If you have one wish: It is cliché, but that we lived in a world with no poverty or wars!
What most people don't know about you: That I was a gymnast in an opera at the Kennedy Center in 5th grade and I didn't eat pig products until high school, because they are my favorite animal.
If you could go on any game show: Family Feud
Hidden talent: “Best dancer” on the team, 4 years running.
Dream car: Tesla…my roommate and I are obsessed.
If you could travel anywhere in the world: Somewhere in Asia…probably Thailand or India!
Favorite class: All of my education and policy classes….they are so interesting! However, Leadership and Education, along with Education of Minority Groups in America would be my top two.
Pets: I had a pet hamster when I was 8 (Mia….like Mia Hamm-ster) and now my family has two dogs and my brother has a snake.
Hero: Nelson Mandela
Favorite childhood TV show: Arthur or Dragon Tails
If you could have dinner with anyone dead or alive: Tina Fey
If you could have any superpower: To fly because I hate driving and am super impatient!
